thing truth is…I don’t like the word thing.
I kind of hate it actually.
So commonly used that it has lost meaning, it is an ambiguous, unclear, and weak
thing parasite clinging to and seeping life from a potentially robust sentence.
Yet we use it habitually, often without realizing it, inserting the word as a sort of default filler or back-hand wave to a greater effort.
Instead of falling into the ranks of boredom like so many writers do, try avoiding the use of the word altogether. Think of
something a dictionary-dweller more specific to what you are trying to communicate, and take the opportunity to get creative. Since thing is such a broad and meaningless word, narrow down what you are referring to, and strengthen your piece with detail.
